A chief forecaster at the Met Office said: “Further snow showers are expected through the rest of today and overnight.

“Snow will be accompanied by a strong northeasterly wind which will accentuate the very cold feel and cause lying snow to drift.

“For the most part only small amounts of snow are likely to settle on roads during the daytime, but from around dusk accumulations of 2-5 cm of snow could occur in places.

“Ice will form on untreated roads and pavements that have been left wet by melted snow from the daytime.

“The public are advised to be aware of the risk of disruption to travel.”

The adverse weather conditions have already caused problems on some roads in North Devon today.

Strong winds resulted in a fallen tree and power cable on the A399 in Combe Martin earlier this morning and the B3234 in Lynton was closed for several hours after a tree fell and blocked the road.

Elsewhere, there have been reports of up to 2cm of snow in Lynton and on Exmoor, as well as reports of snow settling in Ilfracombe.
