THE prospect, dream, and ambition of a group of people in Hatherleigh to provide a much improved skateboard area for the young people of the town has come to the fore again, and is now a great deal closer to being realised.

A grant has been allocated for this purpose by Sport England, which is encouraging communities to improve facilities in the wake of the 2012 Olympics.

But to obtain this sum of £50,000 it is essential to prove that the community is behind the scheme.

Some of the most frequent comments by residents about the recent Community Plan were related to improving the skateboard area.

The Guides, youth group, primary school, Lyndridge Care, Hatherleigh Town Council and Marland School, are all backing the project enthusiastically.

It is strongly felt that the vastly improved facility will benefit the town in many ways. Not all youngsters are attracted to ball related games such as netball, cricket and football, all of which have great support and success in the town and are provided with excellent facilities.

Skateboarding has many physical benefits for growing bodies. It doesn't need adult supervision, and attracts those youngsters who do not perhaps excel in team sports but may find great fulfilment as individuals.

The area on Island Park, with essential improvements, would prove a very valuable attraction in the town.

Skateboard enthusiasts have to travel to Okehampton, or even further afield, at present.

Those who are determined to see this change, with a splendid new skateboard area locally, have to raise a very large sum of money – £13,500 – but they are not daunted and full of plans to achieve their ambition.

Do look at the special display in the paper shop for more details and suggestions about how you can help with fund raising, for example by joining a sponsored walk to Iddesleigh in April.

If you can help in any way it would be wonderful.

You can contact Councillor Clare Tyson on e-mail clare-tyson.muir @googlemail.com – or see Nick at the paper shop with your ideas.

This scheme is very dear to the hearts of many children, parents and organisations in Hatherleigh, who would love your support.
