Georgeham 10 raise Boca doubts
ONE of the season's most surprising results has left Boca Seniors' title ambitions in real doubt.
Georgeham and Croyde went to the North Devon Journal Premier Division champions and won 1-0 on Sunday — despite playing for an hour with 10 men.
Dave Newsome picked himself up from a foul by Shaun Ley to tuck away the decisive penalty early in the first half.
And the Hammers defended brilliantly with 10 men after Connor Stapley was sent off before half-time.
Georgeham's Roger Holmes said: "It was a brilliant display from our youngsters. We called them the magnificent 10."
Despite their pressure, Boca couldn't find a way past Jon Higgs, slipping to their third defeat in the last six league games.
Another clean sheet, at Hartland on Saturday, set Georgeham up for a great weekend.
Sean Creely needed less than a minute to hit the opening goal. Stapley (two) and an own goal made it 4-0 by half-time.
Maik Biggs rounded things off in the second half after Hartland belatedly tightened up at the back.
With five games in hand, Barnstaple AAC and Combe Martin can both put Boca under pressure.
The two sides met on Saturday and the Ammies edged a topsy-turvy game with a late winner from Kyson Chugg.
Scott Sharp, always a threat with his pace, put them ahead before Simon Townsend and Ian Palfreeman gave the visitors a 2-1 lead with 15 minutes left.
Jack Jenkins levelled from the penalty spot and substitute Chugg clinched a fourth straight win.
Disappointed with the defending for the two late goals, Combe Martin manager Danny Turton said: "We shot ourselves in the foot after a good performance."
Sam Fishwick and Matt Bolton each scored twice as Appledore overcame Morwenstow 5-1 at Marshford. Nick Fishwick was also on target for the Fishermen before Noah Evans headed a consolation.
● Dolton's Senior Division match at Shamwickshire Rovers was abandoned in the early stages when defender Dick Turner suffered a broken leg.
The 44-year-old has enjoyed many years as a goalkeeper and centre-back in the Western League with Torrington and at North Devon level with Dolton and Torridgeside.
Turner, who is self-employed, underwent an operation on Sunday and is set to be off work for several months.
Shammy player Carl Hookway, understandably upset by the incident, was sent off for his challenge.
Turner's is the latest unfortunate injury for North Devon footballers. Bratton Fleming's Darrell Spry and Chris Collins of Boca Seniors have also suffered broken legs in recent weeks.
Second-half strikes from Rob Crump and Ben Milburn gave Northam Lions a 2-0 win at South Molton.
