SINCE the year 2000, huge strides have been made to reduce the environmental impact of automotive products throughout their life cycle.

Improvements in manufacturing processes mean that in the last decade, energy used to produce each vehicle is down 43 per cent, water use has been cut by 48 per cent and 83 per cent less waste enters landfill sites.

Average new car tailpipe CO2 emissions have also been slashed and are down 23 per cent compared to ten years ago, to 133.2 g/km. For businesses, this means paying less road tax.

Ford's new Transit Custom is one of the latest "green" vans to be launched, and has more than five model variants. With class leading fuel economy and CO2 emissions from 174 g/km, the 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engine helps cut costs with the automatic start stop system, but it is still gutsy with powerful performance when needed.

Cost-of-ownership is further minimised by the longest service intervals in the class at two-years/30,000 miles. This What Van? Van of the Year is very car-like to drive. And not being a usual van drive, it took me all of 24 hours to get used to not having a rear view mirror, but the wing mirrors are huge and have really useful smaller mirrors for a good side view.

The Transit has been the best-selling van in the UK for 46 years and the Transit Custom now has more technology than most cars, including a lane keeping aid, front and rear parking sensors, steering wheel controls and Ford SYNC which links with a mobile providing hands free and voice activated use and emergency assistance. Ford has already achieved the first-ever Euro NCAP advanced rewards for technology available on a commercial vehicle. Innovations also include load space features with a load-through hatch which stretches from the bulkhead under the seats for extra-long items.

The Transit Custom, which was also voted International Van of the Year 2013 has broken new ground to earn a first-in-class five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP.

This year Ford will also offer a range-topping sport van variant powered by a gutsy 155ps 2.2-litre Duratorq diesel engine.
