Glover at the double
TWO goals from Nick Glover helped Woolsery take a huge step towards the Journal League intermediate one title on Tuesday night.
The leaders beat second-placed Torrington 2-1 at Vicarage Field after Danny Jenkins gave the home side a fifth-minute lead.
Glover equalised with a penalty, then rounded off a tremendous move to win it before half time.
Despite playing their best football of the season, Torrie could find no way past goalkeeper Josh Hawkes.
On the same night, Park United's promotion hopes suffered when they were held by Anchor.
Mark Pooley scrambled an equaliser for Park after their goalkeeper, Pete Yarde, was left stranded by Tim Durbin's long-rage header.
At Marlborough Park, Ilfracombe Town were beating High Bickington with goals from Jamie Prideaux and Colin Woodcock (penalty) when the match was abandoned.
Home skipper Nick Marsh suffered a knee injury midway through the second half.
Saturday was a happier time for Marsh who drilled a shot into the top corner to open the scoring against Northam Lions.
Goals from Mark Hallett and Carl Jenkins could not prevent the Lions losing 3-2 as Woodcock and Tom Goldsworthy secured the points.
Northam won by the same scoreline against Clovelly when Hallett grabbed a last-minute winner after he and substitute Ashley Short had put them 2-1 up.
Tom Forrester, with a 25-yard strike, and Robin Kearney gave Clovelly hope.
Torrington finally beat Buckland Brewer on Saturday thanks to Paul Sullivan and a cracking left-footed volley from Harry Taffs.
The winner made up for an earlier miss as Taffs was denied by veteran goalkeeper John Adams's penalty save.
Woolsery and Park United both dropped points in the title race during the week.
Equalizers stunned Park 5-3 in midweek thanks to Darren Floyde, Nico Pfeiffer and a hat-trick from Andrew Parkhouse.
And despite leading three times with a hat-trick from Glover, Woolsery were held to a 3-3 draw by Braunton.
Adam Pugsley and James O'Sullivan kept the Colts on terms before 16-year-old Jack Birch scored the third equaliser on his second start.
Braunton moved up to fourth, beating Lynton 4-2 after headed goals from Nick Wilde and Max Smith had put the visitors 2-1 up.
Dave Mason, Tom Baretta and Josh Hamer made it 3-2, and Kieran Evans sealed the win with a swift counter-attack.
Jon Pine picked a fine time to score his first two goals for Sporting Barum, helping them to a vital 5-1 success at Merton.
Adam Walters, Dan Ferne, with a towering header, and Ben Walters completed the tally in a match delayed by more than an hour by an injury.
Merton's Nick Ward was the unfortunate player who broke his leg, while team-mates Craig McConnachie and Stuart Wiltshire are also expected to miss the rest of the season with knee ligament damage and a broken toe respectively.
Ben Mason's penalty was the only bright moment for the hosts, and things didn't get any better with a 6-0 defeat at Lynton the next day.
Max Smith bossed the midfield, scoring with a ferocious shot from the edge of the box.
Jack Pugsley (two), CJ Roberts, Richard Badham and an own goal completed the win.
All the damage was done in the first half as High Bickington beat Buckland Brewer 2-0 courtesy of Josh Phillips (penalty) and Tom Sanders.
Buckland moved briefly off the bottom when Andrew Large and Arran Brooks earned a 2-1 win against Torrington Admirals last Wednesday.
But they swiftly returned to the foot of the table when Admirals pulled out of the league.
