Heathcoat Fabrics could close Barnstaple factory and relocate business to Tiverton
A fabric and textiles firm could close its Barnstaple factory and relocate to Tiverton, the owners confirmed today.
Heathcoat Fabrics, formerly known as Small & Tidmas, could close its Vicarage Street factory, which would end nearly 200 years of production in the town.
The Barnstaple site, which currently employs 35 people, manufactures a range of fabrics for digital printing, specialist apparel and technical products.
Cameron Harvie, Managing Director, said the unit has “continued to struggle” during the recession.

He said: “Discussions are currently underway with regard the future of Heathcoat Fabrics business in Barnstaple.
“Trading conditions over recent months have been difficult due to the on-going recession in Europe, which has led to a significant downturn in customer requirements.
“Despite the hard work and commitment of employees, as well as some restructuring of the Barnstaple business, the unit has continued to struggle. As a result, a range of options are currently being discussed one of which is potentially relocating the business to Tiverton.
“No final decision has been made.”
A decision on the future of the business is expected within the next couple of weeks.
