Hospice marathon
WELL, what a weekend it turned out to be for our first ever marathon. The hugely challenging North Devon AONB Marathon was organised by Simon Oliver (from St John's Garden Centre, a big supporter of the hospice) as well as North Devon Hospice's fundraising team and it proved a huge success.
Nearly 500 runners took part on a massively difficult and hilly course that included some of the most beautiful and toughest terrain one could wish for.
We were delighted that the sun came out to greet our hardy runners and show off the outstanding route around the Woolacombe, Mortehoe and Croyde area.
Since the event, the feedback from runners and spectators has been overwhelming. One lady, who has taken part in more than 150 other marathons, said it was the hardest, but most enjoyable, she has ever done and would certainly be coming back next year — and bringing all her running mates! Be sure to visit www.northdevonhospice.org. uk for results and tons of great photos from the day.
Of course, the event was staged to raise money for North Devon Hospice, so thank you to all those who braved the extreme heat and the imposing ascents to take part, as well as our fantastic volunteers and generous sponsors.
With your amazing support, we hope to have raised more than £10,000 once all sponsorship has come in, an incredible achievement.
Another slightly less strenuous way to support North Devon Hospice is via our own weekly Lottery Club – which offers a way of giving with a little bit of hope. Each week 35 people win a cash prize, like Mrs Hall (Lottery No. 75165) from Chulmleigh who wins £1,000 and Mrs Dawkins (67833) of Bideford who wins £100. Mrs D P (05937) of Barnstaple wins £75; Mr R S H (21817) our £50 winner lives in Holsworthy and our £25 winner, Miss K G (49357) lives in Barnstaple.
Congratulations to the other 30 winners, and a big thank you to all our Lottery Club members for their support.
MIKE PENNY,
North Devon Hospice Lottery Manager.
