Two police units were sent out to look for the animals at about 12.20pm around the Landkey junction but nothing was found.

It was thought the dogs may have been hounds involved in a nearby hunt.

A Devon and Cornwall police spokesman confirmed they did notice a hunt going in South Molton but no dogs were seen on the road.

They added: "Two units were sent out for the safety of motorists and the welfare of the animals. The road was not closed. The officers had a look around but it was all clear.

"An officer did notice there was a hunt on the South Molton side but there were no signs of any dogs."

“Quite agree with Kindanimal. There was definitely a hunt in the South Molton area at the time and they were obviously not in control of the hounds. These people who seem to believe they are above the law could have been the cause of an accident possibly resulting in more than the death of a fox. I was also under the impression that hunting with hounds was illegal. It is within the law to use 2 hounds to flush a fox out but it is quite obvious that more than 2 hounds were running amok on the link road. Why is the hunt not being prosecuted?”

“The police should have followed this up - quite clearly the hunt was hunting illegally. Had they been following a trail, the hounds wouldn't have been loose on a major road.”
