Ilfracombe town centre road makeover will take weeks

A seaside town is facing weeks of disruption on the roads while its town centre is given a makeover.

The tarmac road surface in the centre of Ilfracombe in North Devon will be replaced with block paving as part of the £110,000 scheme starting next week.

Authorities say that efforts will been made to minimise disruption during the work being carried out from Monday until Friday, March 22, but residents and visitors have been warned to expect disruption.

Although the roads will be closed during the length of the work, access will be maintained for pedestrians and deliveries to local shops.

Councillor Geoff Fowler, Devon County Councillor for Ilfracombe, said: "This higher quality road surface will replace a temporary coloured surface which, although it has been successful in initiating a café culture in Fore St, has worn and discoloured due to the traffic use in that area."

Ilfracombe mayor, councillor Lynda Courtnadge, said: "The town council is pleased to support this regeneration project as it meets our strategic aims to improve our public places and the quality of our tourism offer which ultimately contributes to the town's long-term economy.

"The new paving on Fore Street will be less prone to staining and more in keeping with this historic part of the town."
