Impressive Combe beat Wellington
ILFRACOMBE TOWN continued their strong start to the Toolstation premier division season with a 2-0 win over Wellington last night.
Goals from Robert Gough and Leon Taswell rewarded a commanding performance from Combe in their first game at Marlborough Park.
Manager Barry Yeo handed Neil Bettiss his first start of the season after the defender missed the opening-day win at Radstock Town due to cricket.
With Scott Huxtable nursing a bruised foot, Darren Parish came in at right-back in the only other change to Saturday's line-up.
Ilfracombe dominated possession and created a host of chances before Gough broke the deadlock on 35 minutes.
James Mayne headed over, Lee Francis rattled the crossbar and Gough saw a deflected shot sneak just wide as they piled forward.
Gough met a low cross from Shaun Lewis to sweep the opening goal past Ryan Lewis.
The visitors were more of a threat after the break but were rarely able to trouble goalkeeper Steve Oliver.
And Taswell, pushed forward from midfield, met a cross from Matt Downing to seal the points with a powerful header 12 minutes from time.
Combe are at home again on Saturday when Falmouth Town, of the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League, are the visitors in the FA Cup extra preliminary round (3pm).
