A PLANNING inquiry into North Devon Council's failure to decide whether to grant permission for a development of 182 homes just off Goodleigh Road will take place in January.

Members of the council's planning committee discussed the matter at their meeting last Wednesday and agreed the points on which the council will defend its decision.

  1. LAND: The proposed site of the housing development.

Developers Wainhomes Ltd launched an appeal after the plan was with the council for five months without a decision being made.

Planning committee members had been reluctant to decide on the future of the 9.8 hectare site after several consultees recommended refusal.

Devon County Council's Highways department objected to the road layout while the Environment Agency had concerns about drainage at the site.

The council's sustainability officer also had concerns about the plans and recommended refusal while the Campaign to Protect Rural England was opposed the application.

Another group opposing the application is the Goodleigh Road and Locality Residents Group.

Led by Hazel Phillips and Katrina Andrew, the campaign group will put forward the case against the plan on behalf of locals at the inquiry.

"We want to do whatever we can to stop this proposal to ruin beautiful farm land just outside Barnstaple," said Hazel.

And with that in mind, the group will meet next month to discuss its approach to the inquiry.

Hazel said: "We'd like to invite anyone who supports our cause to the meeting, to gather and accumulate facts and opinions and pool resources as we prepare to fight this application."

The meeting will take place from 7pm at Well Close House on December 10. There will be mince pies and mulled wine.

“It shouldn't go ahead....why are you attempting to encroach on such a beautiful place? What about all the empty second homes and the houses that are empty or derelict? What about that HUGE property in Lichdon Street owned by the NHS and covered in graffitti? Could that not be turned into soem lovely flats to house some people and by selling it get soem revenue for the NHS? Take a closer look around the town at properties that are already there rather than building horrendous (and very small) new ones.”
