IZZY HAMILTON has welcomed windsurfing's return to the Olympics.

The International Sailing Federation voted on Saturday to reverse its decision to replace the sport with kiteboarding at the 2016 Games.

The move leaves Bude sailor Hamilton as a leading contender to represent Great Britain in the RS:X class in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In May, the 20-year-old former youth world champion told the Journal she was "shocked and devastated" by the news her sport had been dropped from the Olympic Games.

She immediately took up kiteboarding in a bid to make it to Rio one way or another.

However, after a concerted campaign from windsurfing organisations, she can return to her original sport.

Hamilton tweeted: "Life goes back to normal! RS:X is back in the Olympics! So happy! Learning to kite has been an awesome summer and met some amazing people!"

Hamilton is ranked No 2 in the country, behind Bryony Shaw, 29, who won a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

It was reported that some delegates had accidently backed kiteboarding in the original vote because of language difficulties.
