Kernicks sail clear in catamaran contest
ALAN and Fiona Kernick, from Kent, won an international Dart 18 catamaran competition hosted by North Devon Yacht Club (NDYC).
The couple from Sandwich Sailing Club were leading the way after day one at Instow.
And they stayed in front after the second day of racing for a clear victory.
The first North Devon boat was crewed by Nick and Sara Williams.
After the three races on day one, in brilliant sunshine and a force 4 to 5 wind, Charlotte Ewing, aged 13, was the highest-placed NDYC sailor.
At 13, the Great Torrington Community School pupil from Bideford, was taking part in her first yachting event.
The Kernicks hit the front in the first lap and that was how it stayed throughout the day.
On day two, with lighter wind and the effects of NDYC's hospitality the night before, the sailors were grateful to only face two races.
The Kernicks finished clear of David Lloyd and Tory Hackman, of Stokes Bay Sailing Club in Gosport, Hampshire.
Mike Gomme and Will Bell, of the Royal Yorkshire Yacht Club in Bridlington, were third.
