BATMAN, Scooby Doo and a cluster of fairies were among the characters children from a Bideford school dressed up as last week.

Staff and pupils from Kingsley School turned up in fancy dress to celebrate World Book Day last Thursday.

World Book Day celebrates reading and aims to encourage youngsters to pick up a book.

A spokesman for Kingsley School said: "In a time of change and technology where Kindles and other reading implements are prominent, it is good to remember how it feels to hold and read a traditional story book.

"It was a picture to behold. The children came to school dressed as a character from their favourite book to celebrate books and reading.

"Our pre-school remained in costume all day but other year groups changed for Bikeability and their normal time-tabled lessons. A fun morning at Kingsley."
