LATEST: Highways worker remains in critical condition while other is seriously injured following A361 Tiverton van crash

A highways worker who was one of three injured after being struck by a van on the A361 North Devon Link Road in Tiverton yesterday remains in a “critical” condition this morning.

Three workmen were injured after they were involved in a collision with the van, which was travelling toward Barnstaple, at Gornhay Cross at around 11am.

Two of the workers, both in their forties and from Tiverton, suffered serious head injuries in the collision.

Both of Devon’s Air Ambulances attended the scene and landed on the carriageway. One of the men was flown to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, while the other was flown to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in Exeter. One remains in a “critical” condition this morning, while the others condition is described as “serious”.

A third man, who is in his twenties and also from Tiverton, suffered an arm injury and is described as “walking wounded”. He was treated at the scene by paramedics. Two other workers also had to be treated at the scene for shock.

Police said all of the injured men were South West Highways Agency workers who were filling in potholes in a coned off section of road at the time of the crash.

The 43-year-old driver of the white panel van, who is from the Saltash area, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving following the crash.

He was taken to Heavitree Road Police Station in Exeter for questioning before being released on bail until May 20.

The A361 was closed in both directions at Bolham roundabout for around six hours to allow the scene to be cleared and for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash to be carried out.

The Health and Safety Executive today confirmed it would carry out its own investigation into the collision.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward to help with police enquiries.
