The crane was severely damaged by fire and remains at the scene while highways crews decide whether to repair it or remove it.

Police said officers are at the scene diverting traffic around the incident.

The incident will be ongoing for some time and temporary traffic lights will shortly be put in place to direct motorists around the scene.

People have already taken to Twitter to share news of the incident.

Hugh Griffith, Highway Operations Control Centre Manager for Devon County Council, said: “A377 Lapford near the railway arch earlier vehicle fire. Vehicle will need recovery. One lane blocked towards Barnstaple #devonroads”

Meanwhile, motorist Adam Clark wrote: “Lorry on fire in lapford! Diversion through the sticks....you know its going to be fun trip to work when there is grass in middle of road!!”
