Libbaton returning to the Palairet finals day
GERVAIS ELVEY and Chris Drew birdied the first extra hole to put Libbaton into golf's Palairet Memorial Trophy finals day.
They held their nerve to earn a 3-2 win over Tavistock in the quarter-final of the county competition at Royal North Devon.
It is the second time in three years that Libbaton have gone to finals day.
In 2008, they were beaten by Great Torrington in the final.
This year, they will take on Staddon Heights in the second semi-final at Yelverton on Sunday, August 15.
The winners will meet the winners of the Stover versus Exeter match on the same day.
The quarter-final was a step too far for Saunton Artisans, who have just 21 members.
They had beaten Saunton and Tiverton in previous rounds, but lost 3-2 to Staddon in the last-eight match at Exeter.
Ilfracombe's interest in the trophy ended with a 4-1 defeat to Exeter at Tavistock.
Great Torrington were beaten in the final of the Palairet Plate on Sunday.
Dainton Park won 4-1 in the final of the tournament for clubs that did not progress past the second round of the trophy.
A 3½-1½ victory over Exminster on finals day at Woodbury Park gave Torrington their place in the final.
But they had to settle for the runners-up prize of the Mumford Trophy.
Halves from Tony Gooch and Mark Hill, and Paul Wheeler and Dan Copp were the best they could manage.
The three pairs that lost in the final were the winners in the semi-final against Exminster. Rob Greenslade and Craig MacConnachie had won 2 up, Gary Petherbridge and Chris Sturman 1 up, and Garry Harding and Mike McLeod 4 and 2.
● An error on the final hole denied Albert Mackenzie victory in the Saunton Pro-Am.
Mackenzie, the home professional, landed a perfect drive but shanked his second shot and lost the ball in the sand dunes.
He stroked his next shot to within 30ft and sunk his best putt of the day to card three-under-par 68.
Mackenzie's last-hole lapse let in Stuart Little, the former European Tour player from Minchinhampton, who also carded 68 but won with a five-under-par back nine.
Mackenzie took the team prize with an amateur trio of Charles Marten, Peter Lethbridge and Vince Jenner.
Andrew Knight, Mackenzie's assistant, led Luke Quirk, Christen Mowatt and Phil Vent into second place.
● The Macmillan Golf Day at Royal North Devon raised almost £3,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Shaun Loze helped his team win the four-ball stableford with 95 points. Richard Diwell had a hole in one on the 8th and Jimmy Mullen won the putting competition.
Organisers Sally Ford and Margaret Ellis were thanked for their efforts.
Twelve members of Royal North Devon raised £106 for the RNLI in a ladies' stableford.
● Saunton members acquitted themselves well in the regional qualifier for the English Golf Captains tournament at their home course.
The leading qualifier was David Jacobs with 38 points. Fellow Saunton golfers Peter Dunstan, Jeremy Nicholls and Charles West also reached the final, to be played at the Berkshire next month.
