BOOKWORMS are making the most of what could possibly be the smallest library in North Devon.

A former telephone box in Sheepwash has soared in popularity since being transformed into a book exchange.

Writer Deborah Dooley lives nearby.

She said: "It is absolutely lovely. Many times I go and think it's better than a library.

"I have been known to go there in the dead of night with a torch to find something to read before bed.

"A lot of these phone boxes are going out of use and it is a great way to make use of them."

Councils were given the chance to buy a red telephone kiosk when British Telecom announced plans to close a series of them in rural areas.

The move followed a consultation in which people said the red kiosk was a traditional and iconic part of the rural landscape.
