"I have asked him how many call outs each SAR station attended over each of the past 10 years, broken down by type of callout and indicating in each case how many were at night time – this will give a better understanding of just how valuable Chivenor's 24 hour cover is.
"I am also demanding to know when he expects to conclude the negotiations and let the contracts for the "privatised" SAR service from 2012."
Nick Harvey has an online petition calling for the retention of the 24 hour cover which can be signed at www.nickharveymp.com/petitions

“Thanks to Nick Harvey for trying to reverse this ridiculous decision. We look forward to hearing the responses to his questions.
There is a facebook group called "Keep RAF Chivenor 24 Hours" for those who wish to show their support for the campaign to keep Chivenor flying round the clock. Over 7,000 people have joined in a couple of weeks!”

“What brain dead idiot even thought that this was a good idea to start with? What next, the fire service only operating 9 to 5. A&E wards closing for lunch. Oh and can all terrorists please have the decency to time their attacks when everybody is on duty.”

“i do a lot of sea angling on the north devon coast and the thought of being caught out one night and knowing that the boys from 22 are not there if needed is a scarey thought. kev reynolds what you guys do (life boat) is an unbelievable job but as you are aware there are situations when you cant get to people because of rocks etc. i feel your lives could be put at risk trying to rescue someone beyond your abilties because a helecopter will take too long to arrive.
how many lives need to be lost before the MOD realise it was a mistake”

“Feck, ers r us.
May I suggest you do read this story as one day it may effect you or your family. The chivenor SAR provide valuable cover to the local area and beyond. If you are unlucky to find yourself in the water late at night maybe I shall turn my pager off and go back to sleep.”

“We need to keep 22 Squadron flying 24 hours a day as lives depend on it! I know someone who works at Chivenor and spoke to 22 after they had returned from Cumbria. They found a woman almost as soon as they had arrived and saved her life. This is one rescue out of the hundreds they make every year. One family out of 100s who have 22 to thank for their loved ones still being with them.
They are absolutely vital not only to us in Devon, but Southern Ireland, Wales and helping with crises such as the awful floods in Cumbria. Please, please everyone- support them!”
