Man in court for making off without paying for bed and breakfast

A MAN who left without paying for bed and breakfast at two guesthouses was made the subject of a community order with unpaid work.

James Tanner, 34, of Flat 3, 2 Victoria Terrace, Bideford, pleaded guilty to making off without paying £50 for one night bed and breakfast at the Cresta Guest House in Barnstaple.

He similarly left without paying £140 for two nights bed and breakfast at the South View Guest House at Lynton.

North Devon Magistrates' Court heard that both offences were committed jointly with his girlfriend.

David Rowe, for the defence, said his client had suffered problems with alcohol in the past and had spent 18 months in a rehabilitation unit.

He had to leave there rather suddenly and had no money or resources.

He met up with the other defendant in Barnstaple who had also been in rehab.

They stayed at the two guesthouses together but did not have the means to pay.

Mr Rowe said they were desperate.

He added that his client was very sorry for committing the offences and had co-operated with the police in their enquiries.

He was seeking help and support for his alcohol problems.

Magistrates gave him a community order with unpaid work for 50 hours.

He was also told to pay £95 compensation.
