Man escapes injury after car catches fire on Abbotsham driveway
A man managed to escape uninjured after his car caught alight as he backed it out of a driveway in Abbotsham this morning.
One fire crew from Bideford was called to the scene in St Helens at around 9.20am after smoke started issuing from the engine of the Renault Clio.
The man, who is believed to be in his sixties, was reversing his car out of his driveway when smoke started pouring from the dashboard and covering the windscreen.
When firefighters arrived at the scene, flames had started issuing from underneath the steering wheel.

The crew wore breathing apparatus and used one hose reel jet and one covering jet to extinguish the fire.
Neil Hole, Watch Manager, said the fire remained confined to the vehicle but said the crew managed to catch it early before it spread elsewhere.
He said: “The car filled with smoke fairly rapidly.
“Another 30 seconds and it would’ve been a different situation. The fire would’ve developed and it would’ve been a different scenario, especially as it was so close to the house.
“The vehicle is badly damaged inside. It’s caused moderate fire and smoke damage to the car.”
Mr Hole said the cause of the fire was believed to be an electrical fault.
