The police helicopter was scrambled to reports of a man on the railway line near Barnstaple last night.

A train driver reported a male on the Barnstaple to Umberleigh line at around 8.45pm.

Helicopter crews used night vision goggles and the thermal imaging camera to locate the man, who was kneeling between the rail tracks two and half miles south of Barnstaple.

Despite the presence of the force helicopter, the man didn’t remove himself from the track to safety.

Devon and Cornwall Police ensured trains were stopped while they guided ground units to the man’s location.

He was escorted from the railway line unharmed.
