Inspector Gareth Twigg said the police received a call from a member of the public alerting them to the crash. He said the crash barrier was damaged in the collision and the Highways team are going to deal with the repairs.
Fire engines from Barnstaple and South Molton made the vehicle safe and extinguished a small fire in the engine with a hose reel jet.
The car is registered to a keeper from the Barnstaple area.
The Volvo was the only vehicle involved in the incident.
