McKinnon stands tall as West's best battle it out in Bideford
BOXERS from Barnstaple ABC enjoyed a successful afternoon at the home of neighbours Bideford on Sunday.
A slick display from Barum's Keir McKinnon stood out in a show featuring some of the best young talents from the West Country.
Facing Lympstone's Jarrie Chown in the CYP Championships, McKinnon dominated the Class B, 60 to 63kg clash.
He set the tone in the first round, moving quickly in and out and scoring with left-right combinations.
Avoiding the temptation to get into a brawl, McKinnon picked off his opponent for the next two rounds, winning 11-4 on the computer scoring system.
He will be in action again in the southern pre-quarter-finals at Broadplain ABC in Bristol.
Bideford were hosting a show at their new gym on the Clovelly Road Industrial Estate for the first time.
And there were some good displays in the 11 Western Counties Schoolboy Final bouts. Barnstaple's Harry Sugars enjoyed a sweet win over three tight rounds against Callum Wells of Walcot ABC.
While the Swindon visitor was a busy opponent, Sugars maintained his guard and composure. He landed a couple of speedy single rights in the third, edging it 3-2 to become Western Counties champ.
There was disappointment for team-mate Alfie Bond who was stopped in the opening round by Lydney's impressive Cameron Thomas.
● It was a mixed weekend for Bideford ABC's Jack Langford.
He was disappointed at the Bideford show when Scott Wilson of Pilgrims ABC pulled out at short notice.
But Langford has learned he will be part of the England under-19 training squad for a meeting on February 14.
● Barnstaple ABC's Joe Ogijewicz came through a tough contest against Willy Price of Sturminster Newton at Bodmin. Ogi clinched a majority decision to become Devon, Dorset and Cornwall champion and goes through to the regional finals.
● The next North Devon boxing show will be hosted by Barnstaple ABC at Petroc on February 27. To order tickets call Sarah Simpson on 01271 345638.
