FURIOUS Mike Taylor says he read his players ‘the riot act’ after his Witheridge side slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Elburton Villa.

Steve Ebdy hit the bar in an otherwise-unremarkable game, which seemed to be heading for a goalless draw until the hosts scored the winner from a corner with 18 minutes remaining.

Despite plenty of endeavour, Withy struggled to break down a resolute home defence, and Taylor demanded his players improve immediately.

“We were poor against a poor team and it was very disappointing. I asked for a bit of quality on the day but I did not get it,” he said.

“I can’t fault the work rate because the lads worked hard but everything, from a simple pass to a simple delivery, just went wrong.

“I am not a happy bunny. I have read the riot act to the players because the quality in the dressing room did not match the quality out on the pitch.

“It is not good enough for Witheridge Football Club and we should be much higher up the table compared to the quality we have at the club.”

Elsewhere, Cullompton Rangers recorded their second straight league victory with a 2-1 win at Dartmouth.

Brett Worbey put Cully ahead with a neat turn and finish and, despite the hosts levelling, Alex Greening notched a winner with 10 minutes remaining.

“To beat Dartmouth away, who have not lost in their last five games, is a great result against a good side,” said Cullompton manager Pete Buckingham.

“Their keeper Nathan Murphy was absolutely superb and he kept them in the game with some of his saves.”
