THE HEAD judge for the Countryside Alliance Awards has praised South West regional winners at the Berrynarbor Community Shop for going above and beyond the call of duty for their customers.

reported last month, how the little shop scooped the regional award for the second year running, and is now waiting to find out if it has also won the national title of Best Shop and Post Office, which will be announced on February 3.

Head judge Alison Hawes said: "This was also last year's winner but yet again I was bowled over by the fact that the entire community owns and supports the shop and keeps it going.

"One perfect example of the community spirit here was when a holiday maker came in to buy Pimm's.

"One of the volunteers went home to their garden to get some fresh mint, just to ensure they had all the ingredients. "This is an exceptional shop and a worthy winner in an incredibly competitive category."
