New album for Douglas E Powell
ANOTHER popular talent on the acoustic scene has released a new album, writes Rosanna Rothery. The Iron Coast by Douglas E Powell gives the occasional nod to alt-country – think jangly guitars, mouth organ with the odd bursts of tambourine – yet also draws upon English folk influences and the acoustic singer songwriter tradition.
The album has an uplifting vibe and is a platform for Douglas' lyrical knack with words: great poetry with catchy hooks.

Left: Douglas Powell's Iron Coast. You can hear Douglas along with Peter Bruntnell, Jim Jones and Robin Courtnage (Brixton Pieces) in a gig for Braunton based charity Paddle4Relief at The Aggi, Braunton on Saturday March 28. For four years now, Paddle4Relief have been helping the forgotten victims of the 2004 Asian Tsunami, raising more than £16,000 to help provide safe drinking water and numerous community projects in Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka. The event kicks of at 8pm, entry: £3.50.
Fairbanks City Transit System opens the album with interesting instrumental guitar riffs and sound effects.
Tracks like A Sailor's Prayer sound like classic folk songs while the eloquent lyrics on Ballad of the Roman Road, England's Great Waterways and my own favourite American Softwood capture the imagination.
