LADIES, if you have gym phobia and find grunting displays of machismo and iron pumping intimidating; not to mention having to exercise in front of a mirror next to half-naked, lycra-clad women one-third of your body size, then read on.

GO30 Barnstaple is a new ladies-only style gym soon to open in Barnstaple. It's being set up by Wendy Marshall and Wayne Silver who have a passion for helping ordinary women of all ages achieve the figure shape they have always wanted, while improving their fitness levels.

"The women we've spoken to have all told us they find conventional gyms intimidating," said Wendy. "They'd prefer not to exercise alongside men or young, slim, shapely girls who make them feel unattractive. Obviously for some women this isn't an issue, but when you consider that only 12 per cent of the UK adult population use a gym, there are a lot of women who choose not to."

The gym will be modelled on the highly successful GO30 Ladies Only Gym in Romford, Essex, which was recently voted the Best Ladies Only Gym of the Year at the National Fitness Awards and in 2011 won the award for customer care.

"GO30 has a completely different atmosphere," said Wendy. "It can cater for women of all ages in a fun, supportive, attentive environment; no mirrors, no lycra (unless that's your thing) and no loud music. GO30 is run by women who understand the daily pressures and concerns most women experience. Everything at GO30 is female friendly."

Qualified female instructors will be on hand to devise personalised programmes on a circuit of easy-to-use, air-resistant equipment, giving regular re-assessments when needed. According to Wendy, having female instructors is an important part of what makes GO30 different.

"Just as there are times when women would prefer to talk with a female doctor, female gym instructors can offer a level of sensitivity and empathy when discussing women's issues and needs, which might escape a man."

The gym will be open to all ages from 16 upwards.

"The oldest member of GO30 is just over 90 years of age," said Wendy. "Because of the personal attention that each member receives, we can cater for all shapes and sizes whatever their level of health or fitness."

According to Wendy, members will need just 30 minutes, three times a week to achieve the results they want. Instructors will talk to each member about what they want to achieve, carry out a comprehensive induction and devise a programme which will deliver those results, whether that's weight loss, toning, fitness or specific health goals.

"The emphasis is on meeting the individual needs of each member," she said. "GO30 prides itself on the personal attention given and the regular monitoring of progress."

Wendy thinks that while both men and women want to achieve better health through being fitter, the pressures on women are different.

"Our bodies go through significant changes as we mature, perhaps have children and move into older age, which alter our perceptions of ourselves. Couple this with the pressure from society to look a certain way and maintain it for as long as possible, then it's probably reasonable to assume that women have a different emphasis."

Wendy is a former teacher and Wayne has a business background in sales. Together, they are looking forward to running a welcoming fitness centre which will have a café style reception area, giving women a friendly place to chat or wait for family and friends. Above all, they hope it will be a fun, friendly, non-intimidating environment to promote exercise and health improvements.

"Using Progressive Results ensures that over time you'll continue to get fitter, slimmer and stronger, and we regularly assess your needs and goals," added Wendy. "Our attentive and supportive staff will ensure that a member's visit is safe, enjoyable and actually works."

GO30 Barnstaple is due to open towards the end of March in Barnstaple's Trinity Street. However, anyone wanting to make general enquiries can do so through the website (www.go30.co.uk), by phone on 01271 374594 or 07445 868275, or e-mail at info@go30barn staple.co.uk
