Former North Devon Conservative MP Tony Speller dies aged 83

The former Conservative MP for North Devon, Tony Speller, passed away on Friday, aged 83.

Anthony Speller was the MP for North Devon between 1979 and 1992.

Born in Exeter on June 12 1929, Mr Speller was voted into parliament in 1979 after defeating Liberal Democract leader Jeremy Thorpe.

He held the seat until he lost to Liberal Democrat Nick Harvey in 1992.

Alec Pickersgill, Mr Speller's Conservative agent from 1975 until 1990, confirmed Mr Speller passed away at Lucerne House nursing home in Exeter.

He added: "Tony was most proud of being North Devon's champion and cheerleader in West Minster, White Hall and the wider world.

"He never lost an opportunity of promoting North Devon as a wonderful place to live, work and do business, all of which he did with tremendous energy and enthusiasm.

"He maintained this interest throughout his very happy retirement."

Mr Speller died on Friday after suffering from a long standing illness.

He had five children and 12 grandchildren and lived in Newton-St-Cyres with his wife Maureen.

His funeral will be held in the Church of Sacred Hearts in South Street, Exeter on March 4 at 10am.
