North Devon Council accepts Damien Hirst's loan of Verity statue
North Devon Council has agreed to accept artist Damien Hirst's offer of his 60ft statue Verity for Ilfracombe pier.
Councillors today accepted the 20-year loan of Verity, a bronze clad statue of a pregnant naked woman holding a sword with one side of her belly exposed.

Yesterday the council's planning committee approved the structure by 10 votes to two.
Today's executive approved the lease of the site on the pier with an option to extend the area of land around the statue to allow for the construction of a plinth.

They also approved temporary closure of parts of the pier car park to allow for delivery and erection of the art work.
As part of the loan NDC will be responsible for the maintenance of the plinth and there will be an annual revenue cost for this.
It is expected that the statue will be brought into Ilfracombe overnight on October 3/4 and be hoisted into place by October 17/18.

“The people of Ilfracombe have been sold a pup on the back of it bringing money into the town-Its a commercial publicity venture by an artist-it is subjective and irrelevant what the statue looks like-the issue is with the principle of changing the traditional landscape with something which is highly contemporary, whether you like it or not.I was trying to have a discussion with some of the residents on a pro verity facebook group last night and was ceremoniously kicked off for daring to challenge their thinking-some of the contributors were just downright ignorant and rude.I think it will be sad day for Ilfracombe and the planning system when it is erected.”
