North Devon Crematorium gives £4,000 to family charity
A Devon charity has received a £4,000 donation from a crematorium under a pioneering scheme to reduce the environmental impact of burials.
North Devon Crematorium, near Barnstaple, is helping to support the charity Families in Grief with money from the proceeds of a recycling scheme introduced by the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management.

The scheme sees the metals used in the construction of a coffin and the orthopaedic implants removed and recycled.
Until recently, these waste metals have been removed from the ashes and buried in the grounds of the Crematorium, which can pollute the environment.

Bereaved families are always asked for their consent before such modifications are carried out.
However, with these metals and implants removed, it reduces the amounts of poisonous and harmful materials being buried.
Chris Beach, the manager of the North Devon Crematorium said: “I’m really pleased that we have been able to nominate Families in Grief to benefit our recycling scheme.”
Families in Grief helps families, especially children, who have encountered bereavement to come to terms with their loss.
Catherine Langford, the Chair of Trustees of the charity, said: “We are overwhelmed and so grateful to receive this donation.
“This amount of money will make a huge difference to the way we can support the children, young people and families of North Devon.”
This donation is the second that the North Devon Crematorium has made through their recycling scheme.
Another £4,000 was donated to the Children’s Hospice South West, in January.
