"I'm driven to provide the best possible care for local patients and families, but I wouldn't be able to do that without my exceptional colleagues and the many different care providers that North Devon Hospice works with.

"I'd like to think this nomination is for everybody I work with."

Rachel McCarty, director of care at the hospice, said Mary was thoroughly deserving of such recognition.

"Mary is so well known around North Devon," she said, "because she's provided support to a huge number of families down the years.

"She has an excellent demeanour with patients and families, and builds trust and understanding very quickly.

"She is also extremely knowledgeable and well-respected by her colleagues and other health care professionals. To be nominated as one of the top nurses in the country is no more than Mary deserves, having given outstanding service to North Devon Hospice for 22 years and counting.

"We are extremely proud of all the services provided by the hospice, and this is just another example of how we always aim to improve our care to provide the best possible support to local people."
