NORTH DEVON, the county's kings of Twenty20 cricket for two years, have been dethroned.

A batting collapse in their quarter-final match at Bradninch saw them go out of this year's Devon Twenty20 Cup.

Instead it is the Mid Devon side that will join Sidmouth, Abbotskerswell and Plymouth at Cornwood on Sunday week for finals day, an event that North Devon dominated in 2008 and 2009.

Matt Jarrett and Eliot Acton played the key roles in Bradninch's victory. Jarrett lifted them to a useful 121 on a lively wicket with a hard-hitting knock of 31, and Acton took three for 31 as North Devon slipped from 80 for four to 109 all out to lose by 12 runs.

Matt Westaway, the North Devon bowler, said: "We had got used to winning in Twenty20.

"But Bradninch play well on their own ground, they have a good young side, a good fielding unit. It's a bogey ground for us, I can't remember winning there."

Westaway's medium pace brought him one for 11 off four overs as Bradninch struggled to get any momentum.

With spinner Matt Dart (2-21) and pace bowler Jamie Overton (1-20) hard to get away, they were 56 for five.

But then Jarrett joined Dan Hardy (31) in a partnership of 49 that lifted Bradninch towards a testing total that might have been even more challenging had Rob Gear's off spin not brought him four wickets. They were bowled out with one ball left of their 20 overs.

"The wicket was lively," said Westaway. "When they were ten for three, we were assessing it and thought if we could restrict them to 100 we would have a chance — we didn't want too many more.

"One guy (Jarrett) then came in and scored 31 in the middle order and that probably made the difference in the game."

Despite losing key batsman Neil Bettiss in the first over of their reply, North Devon appeared in control at 80 for four, with Matt Nobes (23), Jas Kalsi (14), Craig Overton (21) and Jamie Overton (15) all making contributions.

But three wickets fell for just eight runs as father and son Phil and Gary Chappell got rid of the Overton twins, then Acton dismissed Mike Hedden, the North Devon captain, for two.

The tail took North Devon to three figures but, with Acton nipping out a couple more, the chase fell short.
