Barnstaple also had silver medals from Stuart Otani (senior male 90-100kg), Beth Ambrose (junior female 14-15 years 52-56kg) and Caroline Broadley (senior female 57-63kg).

For Riverside, Mark Wild won gold in the junior 10-12 years 30-34kg age group.

In the run-up to the competition in Hereford, Mark had won gold at an event in Plymouth but was disappointed with bronze at another in Southampton.

That spurred him on to win through to the final where a combination of his training and experience took him to victory.

Mark was one of three members of Riverside taking part.

Chris Rayner, fighting in the fourth and third kyu pool at under-70kg, was taking part in his first national competition and won one of his three fights with a superb hold down.

Also competing at national level for the first time was Simon Sevcik, in the 8-9 years 38-42kg class. He won through to the final only to be denied gold by a more experienced opponent.

Riverside will be adding a fourth junior session to its schedule at Umberleigh Village Hall from January 10.
