CRAIG OVERTON captained the England Under-19 team in their fourth one-day international against Bangladesh.

But the North Devon all-rounder could not prevent his team slipping to a four-wicket defeat in Sylhet.

They fared better on Monday, though, when Overton took the final wicket in a 28-run win in the fifth match of seven, only to concede the series with a six-wicket defeat on Tuesday.

Leading the team in the absence of regular skipper Adam Ball on Saturday, 17-year-old Somerset player Overton, from Northam, struck 36 off 57 balls with three fours and one six.

His stand of 63 for the sixth wicket with Aneesh Kapil (48) lifted England, who were missing three players through illness, from a perilous position at 68 for five.

But they were bowled out for 168 in the 41st over and Bangladesh reached their target with four wickets and more than 12 overs to spare. Opening the bowling, Overton conceded 40 runs off five overs.

Overton said: "This was a game of fine margins. If we had scored another 20 to 30 runs and taken a couple of difficult chances early in their innings it might have been a different result."

Back in the ranks on Monday, Overton's unbeaten 22 off 21 balls lifted England to 195 for eight off their 50 overs.

The right-arm seamer then had last man Abu Jayed caught behind to finish with one for 15 off 4.1 overs as Bangladesh were bowled out for 167.

On Tuesday, Overton made seven in England's 206 and took two for 41 off five overs as Bangladesh reached their target with seven overs to spare.

England, trailing 4-2, complete the tour in Dhaka on Saturday.

Jamie Overton's absence from the trip because of injury meant he was available to collect three trophies at the Devon League awards evening in Exeter.

Representing champions North Devon, Overton picked up the premier-division silverware and the club of the year cup, which is based on marks awarded by the umpires.

He also collected the young player of the year award, which he won jointly with twin brother Craig.

Filleigh chairman Andrew Collier was presented with the E Division champions' trophy.

Bideford committee member Andy Davies collected the C division club of the year prizes.

Steve Moore, of Barnstaple and Pilton, was named B division captain of the year.

Premier division clubs have voted to do away with draws in the 2012 season.

Instead North Devon and their rivals will play a similar game to the one-day international format.

The league's other divisions will continue to play the old format, which allows a team batting second to bat out for a draw if their opponents' total is out of reach.

The top flight's new win-lose format will see teams play 50-overs-a-side games, with bowlers limited to a maximum of ten overs each, powerplays and fielding restrictions.

The only difference to the international game is that the Duckworth-Lewis Method will not be used in rain-affected games, instead the winner will be decided by net run rate.

After this summer's trial, a vote will be taken in 2013 to decide whether to retain the format.

For the rest of the league, teams batting second will now only receive two points for a draw if they reach two-thirds of the target.

The North Devon Twenty20 Cup annual meeting will be held at Barnstaple and Pilton CC on Wednesday, February 15 (8pm).

The draw will be made at the meeting and clubs must attend in order to enter. For more information call Gary Hudson on 01271 374445 or Rodney Bowden on 01271 344413.
