After losing by eight wickets to the state side at Junction Oval on Thursday, today they suffered defeat by the same margin at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Craig Overton made 14 off 22 balls, with one four, as England were bowled out for 173 in the 49th over. Gary Ballance, of Yorkshire, top scored with 57.

Overton then returned the most economical bowling figures – 6-1-21-0 – but could not prevent Victoria easing to victory with twelve and a half overs to spare.

England begin a five-match one-day international series against Australia A in Hobart, Tasmania, on Saturday (3am GMT).

In his first game after joining up with the under-19 squad in South Africa, Jamie Overton added some useful runs from No 8 as England made 221 for nine from their 50 overs. He hit 38 not out off 31 balls, with three fours and a six.

The pace man went wicketless with the ball but, like his brother, bowled a tight line, conceding 29 runs off eight overs, with two maidens. Clyde Fortuin set up South Africa's seven-wicket victory with 75 at the top of the order.

The second fixture in the five-match series is in Cape Town on Friday (8am GMT).
