A LARGE cliff collapse at a beach near Mortehoe has forced the closure of the area.

Access to Rockham has been closed after “hundreds of tonnes” of cliff collapsed earlier this week.

The cliff fall resulted in access to steps down to the beach becoming virtually cut off.

Jonathan Fairhurst, a National Trust ranger, said there is a fear of further cliff collapses so the beach will be closed for at least two weeks.

He added: “I will be monitoring the area for the next couple of weeks to make sure it is safe and will also have to rebuild the access to the steps down to Rockham.

“The landslide is definitely due to the weather and the amount of rain we have had, this area is very prone to cliff falls anyway.”

Jonathan said that he has also had to close the access to Grunter Steps just around the coast from Rockham today.

He said: “There have been some rocks which have fallen down over the steps making it very dangerous.

“I am hopeful I will have that reopened by Easter as it is much more complicated and I need to apply to Natural England so I can rebuild the steps away from the cliff.”

“Not before time really. Was down there last weekend and there was no barrier, no warning, and the path went right along the edge of the cliff, as the railings were half way to the bottom of the cliff! Seemed strange that nothing had been done then, as it would have been quite easy, if you weren't looking where you were going, to have ambled straight over the edge.
Just shows it's good to have your wits about you when around the regions "geologically active" cliffs”
