FIVE fire crews remain in Braunton tonight as attempts are made to contain the continuing floods. 

The severe flooding experienced in the North Devon village started in the early hours of this morning

Tonight three coastguard teams from Ilfracombe, Lynmouth and Combe Martin are handing out sandbags in all areas of Braunton while five fire service pumping appliances are currently deployed near to Braunton School.

A spokesman from the coastguard said they were hopeful the heavy rainfall experienced today will ease tonight to prevent further flooding chaos across North Devon. 

Coastguard teams are dealing with flooding emergencies tonight in Muddiford, Brayford, Hartland and Combe Martin.The fire service is dealing with flooding in Braunton, Barnstaple and Combe Martin.

Police confirmed all roads north of Barnstaple are currently closed with a number of motorists becoming stranded travelling back from last minute Christmas shopping. 

Currently the A361 Braunton Road is closed from Wrafton onwards other roads affected by the flooding are the A39 Shirwell Road, the A399 in Combe Martin, the A377 at Chulmleigh and the B3231 Saunton Road.
