PHOTOS: Whale remains washed up on Putsborough Sands beach

Coastguards were alerted after the remains of a whale were discovered on Putsborough Sands beach on Saturday.

A backbone, a bit of the whale's rib and its tailbone were found by a member of the public.

A search and rescue team from Croyde were sent out to assess the situation at around 12.30pm.

It is thought the whale would have been between 15 and 20 feet long.

The normal procedure would be for the Natural History Museum to assess the remains but a Swansea coastguard spokesman confirmed the remains were so badly decomposed they may not do so in this case.

People took to Twitter to share news of the discovery.

Rachel Carter ‏wrote: "Just been down to see the dead whale carcass on Putsborough beach. Fascinating. Pongy."

The remains are currently still on Putsborough beach.
