INGER-songwriter and pianist Maddie Southorn is playing a concert at The Beaver Inn, Appledore as part of a UK tour promoting her latest release, What Came Before.

Maddie, who is now based in Bristol but whose mother lives in Northam, is looking forward to returning to her roots.

The concert will feature special guest, singer-songwriter and rising star Kiera Osment, who at only 12 years old, is causing something of a sensation on the local live scene.

"It's lovely to be playing back in North Devon," she said. "I've always had a really warm reception from audiences here. I did my very first live performances in folk clubs here when I was starting out and with my mum living just down the road in Northam, it feels like playing to a home crowd. I'm also very excited to have Kiera Osment playing the show with me – she's a special talent."

Maddie's music is a skilful blend of folk, pop and Americana, songs inspired by looking out of the window on long journeys, breathtaking and bittersweet reflections on life and loss, full of texture and nuance. Her voice was described by Decode Magazine as one "that could melt glass".

Maddie has released three previous albums, all of which have been well received, gaining plaudits and airplay both here and in the USA, and inviting comparisons to Suzanne Vega and Kate Bush. Her third album, The Pilgrim Soul (released by Fellside Recordings label) was described by Radio 2's Mike Harding as "one of the best albums of the year – a real gem".

Her latest album, What Came Before, is the result of two years' writing, producing and recording. It's also a true DIY production as Maddie not only wrote and performed but also engineered, produced and created all the album's artwork.

The gig is on Monday, November 12, 8pm at The Beaver, Appledore
