Plans submitted for Barnstaple's third Tesco store
A PLANNING application for a Tesco Express store in Barnstaple High Street has been submitted to North Devon Council and the store could open in April.
In November the Journal reported how Tesco hoped to open a store in the premises which had just been vacated by electrical retailers Bernard Smith.
And the first stage of the process is now in place, with a planning application validated by the council over the Christmas period.
The plans include designs for illuminated signs on the building, a new shop front and the installation of a cash machine.

Tesco spokesman Melanie Chiswell said: "Now an application is in it is likely to be at least three months before the store is opened, providing it gets planning permission."
If approved, the store will be Tesco's third branch in Barnstaple and the sixth in North Devon, the others being in Braunton, Bideford and Ilfracombe.
Public consultation on the matter is currently taking place and ends on January 24.

“Isn't a third Tesco in town a bit limiting of where we can shop? With one in the town centre, one just outside town and one on the outskirts, you'd have to go out of your way and past several Tescos to get to any other supermarket especially with one in Braunton as well.”

“If Tesco were to succeed in putting all other supermarkets out of business then they wouldn't be so cheap, because they could then charge whatever they like.”

“Do Tesco use local suppliers??
Thought they shipped everything in after buying in bulk, hence the cheap prices.
It's hardly fair trade goods.”

“We should support this, there are several good reasons for this;
1. I'd rather have a shop like Tescos than having an empty shop in the high street, or god forbid another charity shop.
2. Everyone shops at Tesco, so a shop in the high street will be convenient for a lot of people.
3. Tesco are generally cheaper than the others so you get good value for money, after all every little helps.
4. Extra jobs for the area, not only in Tesco but also local suppliers.
5. Flobberdob can get cheap fish.”
