Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the policeman, who is from Ilfracombe and was the only occupant of the car, was responding to an emergency call at the time of the crash.

Police were unable to confirm if the marked Ford Focus had flashing blue lights and sirens on at the time of the collision.

The driver has been suspended from driving police vehicles while a full investigation is carried out by Devon and Cornwall Police.

Police also said there was no evidence that weather had been a factor in the cause of the collision.

An eyewitness told the Journal: “The police car passed me moments before with blue lights on but I don’t recall sirens sounding.”

The road and roundabout remained open while emergency services dealt with the crash and recovered the vehicles.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has any information which could help police enquiries should contact police on 101, quoting log number 400 of 10/02/2013.
