POLICE are hunting a man armed with an axe after a robbery at a Bideford jewellery shop.

Armed police were called to the town after the incident at 11.05 this morning.

Police said two men, one armed with an axe, went into Century Galleries in Mill Street.

Nobody was injured and it was unclear whether anything was stolen.

Police arrested one man who was this afternoon helping with their inquiries.

Inspector Andy Oliver said two other men were being sought in connection with the incident. The axe has not been found.

He urged anyone with information or who saw what happened to call the police.

The incident number is 409 of September 4.
