A YOUNG woman from the Torrington detachment of Devon Army Cadet Force has won promotion, making her the most senior female army cadet in North Devon.

Eighteen-year-old Olivia Sanders was made up to the rank of cadet Staff Sergeant by Major Joe Martin, Officer Commanding for North Devon.

Olivia has been a cadet since she was 12 and in that time has notched up many achievements including the Cadet BTec Diploma in public services, bronze and silver Duke of Edinburgh awards, St John Adult First Aid Certificate and the four star Army Proficiency Training Badge.

She has also served her community, carrying out the role of Mayor's Cadet for Torrington.

Staff Sergeant Garry Coates, detachment commander for Torrington, said: "Olivia is a fine example of what a young person can achieve through the ACF when they are prepared to put in dedication, commitment and hard work.

"She is an exemplary cadet and a fine role model to her peers."

Torrington Army Cadets meet at Great Torrington School from 7pm-9.30pm on Fridays. It is open to girls and boys from the age of 12.
