DEVON County Council's development management committee met on Wednesday when it discussed applications to build an Asda and a Morrisons in Barnstaple.

The proposals are for a Morrisons to be built on land currently used by Evans Transport and for an Asda, with 350 homes, public spaces and other works, to be built at Anchorwood Bank, the former Leaderflush and Shapland site.

The committee agreed to visit both sites on Monday, November 12 with a report to be put forward at the next meeting of the committee on Wednesday, November 28.

North Devon Council's planning committee is due to determine the applications on December 5, although the decision could be made at a special meeting of the committee.

Lucie Brailsford, communications manager for the team behind the Anchorwood Bank proposal, said she hoped the decision would be made before Christmas.

"It would be good if it was all determined by then," she said, "and we can just get on with the project."

She said although she was impressed by the development management committee, who she said were "incredibly switched on, motivated and interested," she was disappointed with one of the council officers.

"He referred to the item on the agenda as 'two applications to build supermarkets in Barnstaple'," she said.

"One is an application for a supermarket, the other is a massive regeneration project."
