Sharp rise in reports of violent crime in North Devon over festive period

POLICE in North Devon saw a dramatic rise in reports of violent crime in the week between Christmas and New Year’s day.

In the North Devon sector, which covers Ilfracombe, Braunton, South Molton and Lynton, there were 11 reports of violence with injury and 11 reported incidents of domestic abuse.

Inspector Roger Bartlett said North Devon tends to experience a spike in assaults in the week between Christmas and New Year which doesn’t occur elsewhere.

He said: “This is a big concern for us and we feel we are right to focus our efforts on the night time economy.

“However some of these incidents are cases of domestic abuse and it is good to see more of these incidents being reported.

“A lot of factors come into play at Christmas such as alcohol, people being at home, financial pressures and tense relationships and these can come to a head.

“I don’t think this represents an actual increase in domestic violence but at least if people are reporting it we can do something to help.”
