Skipper steers Bideford
A CAPTAIN'S innings from Ian Hayter helped Bideford win their last home game of the Farm and Cottage Holidays North Devon League season.
Hayter's team made it four wins in a row in the derby against Victoria Park at Westward Ho!
Hayter made an unbeaten 43 as the run chase turned into more of a run stroll, with Andy Webbe hitting 25 and Alistair Clements 22.
Marc Bettiss took three for 55 for Victoria Park who had been restricted to 141 for eight in their innings, which saw Dave Smale take three for 33.
Filleigh can put pressure on leaders North Devon when they play their game in hand on Sunday, against visiting Heathcoat.
Newton Tracey's unbeaten record in the second division was ended by Hatherleigh, who kept alive their hopes of taking the second promotion place.
Newton Tracey are guaranteed the title despite losing by four wickets on Sunday.
But Hatherleigh need Beaford to slip up at Lynton and Lynmouth on Bank Holiday Monday if they are to finish runners-up.
Rob Chapman hit a second successive half century for Hatherleigh, but while his last effort was in a losing cause, his unbeaten 72 on Sunday saw the side to their target of 218.
Luke Reynolds, who had taken two for 32 in Newton Tracey's knock, helped out with 40, and Hugh Romans hit 34.
Richard Tidball had also taken two wickets in the leaders' 217 for eight, which featured 50 from Ian Gear and 37 from Rob Gear.
Beaford need to avoid defeat at Valley of the Rocks on Monday if they are to join Newton Tracey in the top flight next summer.
While they cannot afford to lose, a repeat of Sunday's tie with Shebbear would be enough for Beaford.
Having bowled out their visitors for 106, Beaford were just one run from victory when Andy Bryan had Michael Lemmings caught at mid-on.
On a soft wicket, they had nudged their way towards the target with Ben Lake scoring 26, and Geoff and Nigel Lake adding 15 apiece. Ollie Wickett and Bob Barnes took three wickets each. Wickett top scored with 33 in Shebbear's innings.
Arron Steel notched 31 in a half-century stand with Wickett that rescued them from 26 for six.
Pete McMillan did most to rattle them with five for 18.
Josh Atkinson, aged 14, took five wickets for Bideford second XI, who beat Westleigh by nine wickets.
The right-arm seamer had five for 34 off six overs to help bowl out the third division's bottom side for 145.
Luke Perkiss (34) and James Corry (33) were Westleigh's best performers with the bat. Peter Stevens led the reply with 85 not out.
Barnstaple and Pilton second XI became the latest victims in Shobrooke Park's eight-game winning streak.
Shobrooke, likely to go up in second place, scored 284 for eight, which was 83 too many for Barnstaple, despite Rodney Bowden making 97.
Kelseymen had a last-over win against Belstone in the fourth division, and it was good job they managed it as fellow strugglers Bratton Fleming second XI also won.
That means the fourth division relegation picture is still unclear.
With Chris Brigden taking three for 25 and Tom Johnson two for 35, Belstone posted 196 for seven at the Kelsey Ground.
There was one ball to spare as Martin Lewis (10no) and Brigden (7no) saw the home side to a four-wicket win.
Martin Seward top scored with 51, Jamie Matthews hit 41 and Wayne Manning added 35.
Bratton dragged Victoria Park second XI back into the drop battle by bowling them out for 143 and knocking off the runs for the loss of five wickets. Ollie Hunt led the chase with 41 not out.
Josh Johnson made 29 not out and Graham Farmer 25 in Victoria Park's 143 all out.
Lynton and Lynmouth second XI climbed away from the danger zone with a 60-run win at promotion-chasing Halberton.
They had James Peacock and Ben Warren to thank for their victory after the last pair both made 22 not out to lift them from 96 for nine to 148 for nine.
With his tail up, Warren then took six for 15 in eight overs as Halberton collapsed to 88 all out, 50 of which came from the bat of George Rowe.
North Devon third XI replaced Heathcoat seconds at the top of the fifth division when they beat them by seven wickets.
Henry Platts-Martin, Ed Mann and Dan Pickard all took three wickets in Heathcoat's 190 all out.
Pickard then made 99 not out, teaming up with Casey Elliott (42no) in a match-winning stand of 91.
