Small earthquake near South Molton

A SMALL earthquake occurred close to South Molton.

A small tremor measuring 1.4 on the Richter scale was recorded between Mariansleigh and Rose Ash at 9.44pm on Monday, according to the British Geological Survey.

The quake lasted 6.4 seconds.

Sarah Dodson, at the nearby Masons Arms in Knowstone, said she and her husband did not feel anything.

"We have had some locals drinking in here from Rose Ash since then but have not heard anything about it," she said.

"The ground certainly did not move here."

Parish clerk for Romansleigh Susan Squire had also not been notified of any quakes from parishioners.

The quake took place at a depth of 12.4 km.

The largest recorded earthquake, which occurred in Chile, measured 9.5 on the scale.

The location is roughly 6 km South East of South Molton.

    “There are about 600,000 earthquakes of this magnitude every year. That's more than 1,600 per day globally. Anything less than 2.0 on the Richter scale is imperceptible, so I wouldn't expect your phone to be ringing anytime soon.”
