ANNA SMITH ensured there was British success at the AEGON Pro-Series Barnstaple by teaming up with singles champion Johanna Larsson to win the doubles final this afternoon.

And the pair were planning to celebrate with a slap-up meal courtesy of their coach — at McDonald's.

Reigning champions and top seeds Kelly Anderson, of South Africa, and Finland's Emma Laine pushed their opponents all the way before going down to a 7-5, 6-4 defeat.

Swede Larsson said: "Our doubles coach said if we won, he would buy us McDonald's. So we can celebrate with junk food.

"Now I have won the singles and doubles, I get to choose whatever I want!

"We had to work hard because they were playing really good today."

The first seven games of an enthralling match brought breaks of serve.

Larsson and Smith gradually became more aggressive, putting pressure on the more subtle approach from their opponents.

A run of four holds was crucially broken in game 12 as Anderson, who was impressive at the net, double-faulted to hand the number three seeds set point, then she put a backhand wide to lose it.

"Maybe we didn't really step up in the first set, but we came through it somehow," said Larsson.

Smith's serve was broken to love in the third game of the second set. But she hit straight back with a smashed winner to break Anderson.

The British number 10 had the crowd cheering when she ended a long rally by drilling the ball at Anderson's feet to go 5-4 and 0-30 up.

Anderson went wide to give Smith and Larsson championship point, from which Smith volleyed an emphatic winner.

"In the first set we were a bit passive and let Kelly dictate a lot of points. In the second we looked to do more on the returns," said Smith, who follows Anne Keothavong, last year's Barnstaple Open singles winner, in bringing a British triumph to the Tarka Tennis Centre.

"It's always fun playing a final in front of a home crowd. They really got behind both of us so we had a lot of fun out there."
