Snow hits the far West – and the big freeze is not over yet
Parts of the Westcountry that had previously escaped the worst of the wintry weather woke up to a covering of snow yesterday as the big freeze that has affected almost all parts of Britain continued.
Helston, Redruth, Camborne, Falmouth, Truro, St Ives and Penzance had their first snowfall of the winter, overnight on Sunday.

Pupils at Halwin Primary School in Helston along with those at St Levan Community Primary School in Penzance enjoyed a day off because of the conditions. In Devon, Parracombe Church Of England Primary School at Parracombe, near Barnstaple was closed because of snow and ice and was expected to remain closed until today.
Instead children were sent to Kentisbury and Lynton schools as alternatives. West Buckland School, near Barnstaple, was also closed.

As temperatures dipped below freezing in Cornwall on Sunday night the county was yesterday on a yellow "be aware of ice" weather warning.
Icy roads will continue to hinder Westcountry drivers for the remainder of the week, according to Met Office forecasters. The next few days will see sub-zero temperatures, sleet, snow and rain.
However, by Thursday Devon and Cornwall are expected to see sunshine. A spokesman for the Exeter-based Met Office urged caution on the roads.
He said: "Tomorrow, Thursday and Friday are going to be quite dry but with temperatures still remaining low overnight and early morning there's still a risk of ice.
"Thursday will see sunny spells, which if the sun is strong can dazzle while driving so we'd urge those on the roads to take extra care."
Sleet or snow was expected to hit Moretonhampstead, Okehampton and Holsworthy in Devon this morning.
Meanwhile Teignmouth and Salcombe were on standby for heavy rain showers with some of sunshine. Light rain was also predicted for West Cornwall.
Top temperatures during the morning today are predicted to be 5C at St Ives, Salcombe and Teignmouth.
